We have a big wooden frame covered with a felt out of new wool to make woolen pictures on. For quite a long while the colour of the felt background was prussian blue. Coulours showed up splendidly, even the light ones, with a lot of contrast. But in all these years the hue was too vivid, too strong, too loud for my taste. Because it was valuable I always hesitated to take the felt off. Finally I did and now I ask myself why I haven´t already done so. Now I think it is just right. Wool can be wonderfully mixed and all shades of colour, pastell and otherwise, show up effectively. During the past years the children have created wool pictures on it. According to mood, time of year or the year´s holidays. Now it is back with me and I am enjoying plucking and laying out the wool. It is important to lay out the pieces of wool very thinly. They should float like a feather when dropped over the table from higher up. That is not easy, not only for children but also for adults. Piece by piece is laid out and worked with. Patiently. From light colours to dark ones and layer by layer. Wonderful mixtures appear. Getting a feel for the colours comes automatically. After finishing parts can be flattened with an iron, other parts remain elevated. That gives it a greater three-dimensional effect. If desired, the picture can be removed from the felt background when finished. That usually can be done without damaging it. In this way small pictures can be mailed in cards or wander on into new frames. This kind of work is tranquil, slow and heartfelt. I wish all of you a good new Year 2013. May it be a year of good health and fulfillment for all of us.
